The Challenge

Artificial Intelligence is triggering one of the largest infrastructure expansions in modern history. Companies around the world are investing billions into GPUs, AI servers, networking systems, storage, cooling technologies, and data centers to power the next generation of intelligent systems. But beneath this explosive growth lies a much larger and mostly unexplored opportunity.

What happens after the first life cycle of AI infrastructure?

As hyperscalers, enterprises, and AI firms rapidly upgrade their systems, enormous volumes of GPUs and data center hardware will enter secondary markets. Much of this equipment still contains significant computational value, reusable components, recoverable materials, and untapped economic potential.

This shift will not simply create refurbishment businesses. It may create entirely new industries. Just as cheap computing created the software economy, and smartphones created the app economy, accessible AI infrastructure may create new forms of:

  • Distributed intelligence
  • Decentralized compute
  • Local AI ecosystems
  • Community-owned infrastructure
  • AI cooperatives
  • Secondary compute marketplaces
  • New models of economic participation

Core Question

What new industries, business models, and economic systems emerge when AI infrastructure becomes reusable, distributable, and dramatically more accessible, while generating economic and environmental value?

The strongest ideas will not merely recycle hardware. They will reimagine how AI infrastructure can create entirely new forms of value.

 

  • Competition is open to all ASU students.
     
  • Teams must consist of a minimum of 2 members and a maximum of 4 members.
     
  • Important: At least one student in the team must be currently enrolled in the W.P. Carey College of Business.

 

 

  • 10-Minute Video Pitch: Compulsory. Every team member must present during the video.
     
  • Maximum 10-Page Slide Deck: (any supporting details and assumptions in the appendix).

  • Financials (what numbers look like over next 3 years), and how much funds will be needed
